Biodiversity GIS upgrade

16 February 2012

SANBI's Biodiversity Advisor serves spatial data through BGIS. In an effort to provide a website that is user friendly with improved functionality, the BGIS online mapping system has been upgraded.

New functions offered by the upgraded system include:

  • identifying multiple features found within a polygon or beneath a line
  • searching for features using keywords
  • exporting attributes of selected features as a .csv file

In the ongoing process of improving the quality of service offered by BGIS, the Land Use Decision Support (LUDS) tool will be upgraded in the next few months. This upgrade of the LUDS will include the addition of current biodiversity datasets.

Older data sets will be archived (NSBA2004, CAPE, SKEP and STEP). They will still be available for download, but will not be available for viewing on the online mapping system.

If you have any questions about the new system, please contact the BGIS Support Desk at bgishelp@sanbi.org.za or 021 799 8738.
