Environmental Interpretation Programme
With its network of gardens, research centres and herbaria, SANBI is a rich storehouse of valuable information on the plant life, climate, ecosystems and biodiversity of South Africa.
The SANBI interpretation team aims to make South African biodiversity accessible and exciting for garden visitors. The art of opening the minds of visitors to our amazing natural environment and its hidden treasures requires technical skill and subject knowledge. Scientific information can be interpreted in a simple, relevant, exciting and attractive way.
Each of SANBI's 9 gardens has a staff member responsible for interpretation, and their duties include conducting guided tours, designing interpretive brochures, special plant labels, story boards and setting up touch tables and interactive displays. Their duties also include informal visitor liaison, giving talks on specific subjects and organising and co-ordinating interesting environmental educational events.
The SANBI interpretation programme offers something for all our visitors, from age 6 to 60 and beyond. Linking people with nature is the SANBI interpretation team's motto. It is their priority to showcase SANBI's magnificent gardens and South Africa's rich biodiversity as best as they can.
Many of the school groups who visit our gardens require syllabus-linked tours. They are accommodated in specifically designed programmes run by the SANBI Environmental Education section.
