Harold Porter NBG: Capacity Development

Teacher Professional Development Workshops

Teacher Professional Development at Potberg

Interactive capacity development workshops are offered to educators and education officials. The workshops are based on the following themes: Biodiversity, Sustainable Development, Climate Change and the Active Learning Framework.

The Overberg FET Project:
The project aims to build capacity among identified Life Sciences educators in the Further Education and Training (FET) band through a focused teacher professional development programme leading to the educators implementing curriculum-linked environmental action projects within their local context.

A partnership with the Overberg Education Department was formed and the initial planning for this project completed. A series of six workshops based on the themes biodiversity, sustainable development, climate change and the active learning framework was facilitated during 2011. This has led to the participating educators developing and starting to implement their environmental action projects in 2012. Five high schools have started their environmental action projects: Groenberg High School in Grabouw, Swellendam High School, Swellendam Seconday School, Hawston High School and Gansbaai Academia. Their projects include studying the health of river and wetland systems, looking at biodiversity loss and re-introducing indigenous vegetation to an area as well as starting a garden. These projects involve more than just awareness raising; learners and educators are empowered to take environmental action.
