Walter Sisulu NBG: Outreach Greening Programme

Learners and teachers, are you tired of your featureless and boring school environment?

Our outreach horticulturists have a wealth of information and knowledge to green your school yard with indigenous plants. Many schools can bear testimony to what has been achieved in their school grounds. Learners and teachers can be proud of their schools and learn to take care of their environment.

Teachers and learners are taken through a series of workshops during the year to cover the different aspects of gardening:

  • Why indigenous?
  • Garden design
  • Soil preparation
  • Plant propagation
  • Garden interpretation
  • Curriculum links

Horticulturists assist schools and communities to develop water-wise, educational and practical indigenous gardens. The main aim of the Programme is to encourage ecological awareness and environmental responsibility. Educators are encouraged to use the indigenous gardens as teaching and learning resources.

Horticultural skills are developed through a series of workshops to enable integration of Environmental Education and improved School's environmental management practices.
